At Arkansas Tech University, the medical assistant program lasts approximately two years. It is also an Associate of Applied Sciences Degree program.

Admission to the program’s second year is competitive, as approximately only twelve students are enrolled each year. You must make at least a “C” is your professional courses leading up to your second year. You must also hold a grade point average of at least a 2.00 on a scale of 4.00.

Should you not be granted admission during the first round of selections, you will be placed on a ranked waiting list.

And while Arkansas Tech University doesn’t list the cost of their program’s tuition or books on its website, it’s worth noting that students who enroll in AHS 2034 (Medical Assistant Clinical Practice), AHS 2044 (Medical Assistant Administrative Practice), and AHS 2055 (Externship, which is scheduled at the end of the program) will need to carry malpractice liability insurance. This is a cost that will not be included in the tuition fee, and therefore the premiums must be paid by the student.

Heritage College in Little Rock offers an extremely unique opportunity for medical assistant students. In a program entitled “X-Ray Medical Technician – Medical Assistant,” this college will they provide you with the skills and education necessary to perform limited scope X-rays, but you will also become a fully trained medical assistant, as well.

At Heritage College, you’ll learn skills such as phlebotomy, diagnostic testing, X-ray film assessment, Medical Coding and Billing, sutures and dressings, electrocardiograms, and more.

During training, you will also be placed in an internship, where you can have a more hands-on learning experience. Heritage College appears to care about their students once they graduate, as well, as they offer placement office that will help their grads find jobs.

It should be noted, too, that medical assistants who graduate this program with training and education as limited scope X-ray operators are not synonymous with radiologists, radiographers, radiography technicians, rad techs, or radiology technicians. With that said, they will be able to perform many routine X-ray tasks that are performed inside medical offices.
